How do I edit pictures using Photoshop to create text and different effects on the photo?

I'm trying to create a MySpace profile and my photos are bland so I want to edit them, but I have no clue how to with Photoshop. PLEASE HELP! ANY TIPS OR TUTORIALS?How do I edit pictures using Photoshop to create text and different effects on the photo?
There are a lot of tutorials for Adobe Photoshop beginners here:

How do I edit pictures using Photoshop to create text and different effects on the photo?
Photoshop is a wonderful program, but is has so many features that it can seem overwhelming to a new user. A tutorial is a good idea, but if you want to get started on your own, here are a few suggestions:

You should save a copy of your picture (for example, image246copy.jpg) and start playing around with the program using that copy, so even if something doesn't work or looks awful, the original picture won't get affected. (Please make sure you're working on a copy!)

The Tools palette usually appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen when you open Photoshop. You should see an arrowhead symbol (move tool) and a dotted box (marquee tool) as the first two tools in the palette. If you scroll your cursor over each box and stop, a little pop up box will appear, telling you what the tool is.

If you want to just put some type on your photo, go further down the tool palette to the ';T'; (text tool). As soon as you click on that, Photoshop will create a separate layer where the type will be created. Move your cursor to the spot on the picture where you want your type to be and start typing!

But before you do that, look at to the top of the screen. Once you're in the type tool, you should see a bar at the top that gives you choices of font, size, color, etc.

However, if you want to change your type after you type it, make sure you're in the type layer that you've created. The Layer palette should be showing on the right side of your screen. Always make sure you're in the correct layer that you want to be working in or you'll accidentally make new layers.

BTW, you can move the type around, using the Move tool I mentioned.

As you can see, there's a lot to learn. Get familiar with just a few features at one time. If you're willing to do some trial and error, along with checking out some tutorials, Photoshop can be a wonderful resource.
If u rasterize the layer you cal use the test as an image and aply lots of kool standard effect or even be more crative and make your own

image- rasterize- type
There is a text tool in Photoshop. That's how you write stuff. Then after you write it, you can apply Styles and Effects to make it look cool.

You will need to work in layers.

What are the differences between Elements 7 and CS4?

Are they big differences?

Is it worth paying more?

Also what's the difference between Premiere Elements 7 and CS4?What's the difference between Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 and CS4?

Is it difficult to learn Adobe Photoshop on your own, without taking a class?

I've read that it can be useful in creating compositions for drawing and painting. Do you think I could teach myself with the software and books or videos from the library? Also, what other uses does Adobe Photoshop offer for the visual artist (painters, not photographers)? Is it difficult to learn Adobe Photoshop on your own, without taking a class?
Yes and no. No, it is pretty intuitive and you can do the basics almost instantly.

Yes, there are so many options that you would never think of you should at least do the tutorials to get acquainted with the possibilities. Someone to guide you to get it right would be of great help.

Also stuff like layers and how to use them may need some explaining but it is all there in the Photoshop. Like all tools it takes time and skill to get good results.

I often use it to get my color scheme right or a composition. Is it difficult to learn Adobe Photoshop on your own, without taking a class?
Google some photoshop tutorials there are great sites for this, find what you like to do( eg. make up or extreme make over or fire font in photoshop) then go with the tutorial you picked, that will help you get familiar with photoshop's tools and menus, few tutorials and you mastered it. Report Abuse

yes you can learn it by yourself, but you may miss so many other options about the program you didnt know without some help...its a great program!

i was able to scan my paintings into the program and fine tune parts of my painting or make changes without harming the original
yes it is really easy to learn adobe... it is better to learn by yourself so that you would be able to really appreciate and know every filter, options...but seek help to other pro too.... you may get some really good ideas from them and merge their ideas...

adobe's really fun.... just enjoy....
It's not hard to learn you're way around PhotoShop but there are tools you likely won't even know exist unless you take some classes. I know people who have been using it for a while and still find new tricks.

Which one do I transfer to the hard drive so I can install it on my netbook? How do I transfer the Adobe Photoshop installer to an external hard drive?
Make an .iso (disc image) file from the original disc and save it on your external hard drive. Mount the drive with your netbook and then mount the .iso file using Daemon Tools. This will make your netbook think that you have mounted the CD or DVD so you can install the program without worrying about which installer to copy.

How to crop an images from Photoshop or any program neatly without untidy edges?

I need to crop an camera out from a picture without the use of chroma key. How can I do that without leaving sharp edges. I tried pen tools and lasso. Both ways left untidy marks.

Any special tricks you professional can offer? I am just beginner. =)How to crop an images from Photoshop or any program neatly without untidy edges?
Use the pen tool, it is very clean and professional. The other guy was trying to tell you the same thing but not coming acorss too clearly. Its the tool that looks like a calligraphy pen nib. Trace your object roughly with this tool, and make the layer transparency zero so you can see your lines and there won't be a fill color.

Then use the convert anchor tool to drag out the handles for bezier curves and go aruond making the edges perfect and smooth. When you make this selection a path you can also select to feather it a little bit so when you clip it the edges will be a tiny bit blurred. It comes out looking really great. How to crop an images from Photoshop or any program neatly without untidy edges?
in photoshop you can use the path tool, it gives u the ability to manipulate the selection u want to crop via bazeer points and handles that are very helpful in forming curves..

How do you make something in photoshop and keep the same resolution when you switch over to another program?

I haven't used the program in a while, but i believe all you have to do is match the resoution of both programs and you should be fine. It should work expecially if the other program is by the same company...Adobe.

How can i work as a Photoshop artist online?

I'm an experienced Photoshop artist and I want to work on image enhancing etc online and hence establish my self a s digital artist with online clients. I want to eventually quit my day job as this will be my career. Does anyone know how i can go about this? How can i work as a Photoshop artist online?
To start any business you need to advertise. Do not spam anyone, that will turn them off of you for sure.

Perhaps you can find a few local small businesses and offer them a free trial. You then will have something to show as a portfolio. How can i work as a Photoshop artist online?
A great site http://youronlinejobs.com that you should visit isThis site is free and will show you how to earn money online the legit and easy way. I earn about $1200 each month and work about 1-2 hours per day. You are guaranteed to get paid, so you don't have to worry about this being some sort o Report Abuse

The VERY first thing that you need to do before you even think of advertising is to establish a website that showcases your skills. If you're working online, no one will be able to meet you face to face, so your work online must make that first impression for you. At the very least you need to have a complete portfolio online. Better yet a fully designed website. After that, think of advertising locally to build a client base that will support you as you branch out to more clients that are not quite so close. And I HIGHLY recommend that you do not quit your day job until you have an ESTABLISHED and consistent client base. I am a third generation graphic designer, and I know from experience that this market is FLOODED with talented people right now.
There are many ways. If you want to do stuff for your client there are couple of options

    1. you do the work on your computer and your client sees it and provides feedback and recommend changes (with a yellow marker) - you can use net meeting from Microsoft or Webex

    2. you want to do the work on your client computer directly by getting access to it and show them how to do it or just do it

    - you can use webex

Photoshop elements 4 - How do I blend one layer say a photo onto a crumpled piece of paper on a 2nd layer?

I wish to create a crumpled photo effect using Elements 4. The photo would have to be blended such that it follows the contours of the crumpled paper. Is this possible with Elements 4 and if so how do you do it?Photoshop elements 4 - How do I blend one layer say a photo onto a crumpled piece of paper on a 2nd layer?
Try setting the layer above the paper to 'multiply' (top left corner of the layer palette - default value is set to 'normal'). This way dark areas of the crumpled paper will show through and the image will look like it's on the paper. If you experiment with the different layer blends, you can create different effects. Multiply adds together the colour values of the two layers. Adjusting the levels of the two layers will vary what shows through. Reducing the mid-tones of the paper (increase the contrast) may help make the image appear a bit clearer.Photoshop elements 4 - How do I blend one layer say a photo onto a crumpled piece of paper on a 2nd layer?
You may be able to accomplish it different effects by selecting different parts if the photo on top of the paper. Try to select different parts of it and save the selections.(Under the drop down ';selection'; menu) This way you won't have to retrace them every time. You may want to also break down the parts into individual layers, so the different parts will be easy to deal with. You can change the angles of the individual parts with the ';skew'; option. My advice would be to physically create what you are trying to do, then just scan it. You can alter the things you need to and would look like what you wanted. If you don't want to mess the originals, just scan them in, print them out, and crumple those up.

Not really sure what exactly you are having difficulties in!!!

If you want to change to different colors, there are many ways to do it:

    1. Go to Window tab on very top of screen. Click on Color. You will then have a palette. It does not matter what kind of tool you are using. When you move your mouse on the palette, the tool will automatically change to ';eyed dropper.'; Click on any color you want. The color swatch on the tool window would change to the color you just select.

    2. You can directly click on the color swatch on the tool window. Another smaller window will pop up. Choose whatever color you want from there, and click ';ok.';

    3. Click on eyed-dropper on the tool window. Now your tool is eyed dropper. Move it to any color you want to on a layer, and the eyed-dropper will pick up the exact same color. Then, you can use that to match exact color to need to color in somewhere else.

If you have difficulties choosing different brushes, then:

    1. Click on brush tool on tool window. Then, look at the tab right below the function tab at the very top of screen. The tab is brush property. You can choose different sizes, shapes, opacity, etc...

If you just want to make a palm tree, then:

    1. Use angular shape brush, pick green color, and draw leaves.

    2. Go to the color swatch on the tool window and click on the swatch to change the color to brown.

    3. Draw the trunk.

How to make rounded corners in photoshop without have a back border?

I've been trying to make pictures in photoshop with rounded corners and I don't want the background color. I've seen many pictures without those back borders. So can someone please explain to me and give me good instructions on how to make the rounded corners without the colored borders in the back. How to make rounded corners in photoshop without have a back border?
Lmao, You have to make sure that the background colour is transparent. You can choose this before you create a document.

When saving the file make sure to save as PNG or GIF, not a JEPG as JPEG does not support transparent.

If you open a picture and round the edges you will NOT have the option I stated above, But what you can do here is round the edges and select the stuff you want gone, then select the BACKGROUND ERASER TOOL. Simply erase every thing outside of the edges.

Again, MAKE SURE TO SAVE AS A GIF OR PNG.

NOTE: You will know it is transparent in Photoshop if the background colour is checkered gray and white squares. How to make rounded corners in photoshop without have a back border?
First choose the the rounded corner corner shape from the toolbar, then you draw the shape over the picture, open the path palette and convert the path into a selection then mask it to the required picture

Find your start up folder or start up commander and take adobe photoshop off the start up list. How can I stop Adobe Photoshop from automatically opening pictures everytime I start using my flash drive?
When you installed it, you must've clicked ';Set Photoshop as my default picture viewer.'; Photoshop is a huge program and takes forever to load, so you should've unchecked that box and just allowed your computer's default, and much smaller picture viewing program load. It takes some work, but yo'ud have to uninstall Photoshop and re-install it again, ensuring that you don't set it as your default. Hope that helps.
This should fix it (I'm doing it in XP - should be similar in Vista).

    Plug in your flash drive.

    Open My Computer

Right click on the drive and go in properties

In the autoplay tab, select ';Take no action'; as your default.

DNG is Adobe's RAW file format. You have to open them in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) for processing, not viewing. To open RAW files in Elements: File%26gt;Open As. In the dialog that opens, roam to the photos, select those you want to open. Be sure to select Camera Raw in the Open As box at the bottom of the dialog. Then click OK. The ACR will open with lots of sliders for RAW processing.

I am just looking for something to edit digital photos. What's the difference between photoshop elements and the super expensive versions?
Its a cut down version, but covers about 90% of the main one, but should be more than enough for your needsWhat's the difference between photoshop elements and the super expensive versions?
If you're not doing it seriously, just for kinda fun and not for professional design, get photoshop elements. The other photoshops are for professional designers that have to do amazing hard changes to photographs and make them look real, such coloring black and whites, correcting dust and marks, cloneing or masking over areas, or just fixing a completely damaged photo and making it look like new again.

If you're just doing a little color correction or turning them black and white, basic things...get the cheap version and I'd even start out with the cheap version any way because it gets you used to the tools and such.
To do basic photo editing, Elements is sufficient.

Elements has fewer layers per file and I don't think can edit in CMYK color which can be a big downside to color correcting photos with people in them. I'm sure there are many other things not in Elements but it's stuff 90% of most PS users never use anyway...

When you make pictures on photoshop, how do you usualy start?

I just got photoshop for making pretty pictures and I'm excited but I dakno how to use it :/. I hear some people will draw something usually and then scan it on there and then add color and effects. Is that how you do it? To make gorgeous pictures that look bright and vivid with color? I'm happy cuz this is so much better than paint (lol) but it's also a lil confusing!!? Please help me!When you make pictures on photoshop, how do you usualy start?
I usually scan my work in and then colour it in photoshop. Sometimes i'll do my sketching right in photoshop or illustrator but it can be difficult to control using a mouse.

There are a good number of tutorials that you can find online which I've provided a couple with.

If you want to do coloured work I would recommend getting a scanner, drawing you pictures and then adding colour later. When you make pictures on photoshop, how do you usualy start?
I'd suggest taking a class. What you can do to play with it is to right click on any photograph you have stored on your computer and select ';Open with'; command. Choose photoshop and just say yes to any dialog boxes.

Go into the adustment menu and experiment with brightness, color, etc. After each adjustment you can just hit Control+Z to undo what you just did. If you really mess up you can Control+Z several times to get back where you were.

You can use ';Filters'; to add effects and have some fun. But it's well worth the money to take a night class and learn more about photoShop. you can do amazing stuff when you know the tools. Good luck!
choose a photo to edit, clik open and open that photo and start to mock around with the layers...
When I do my CG pieces in Photoshop I usually start out with a scanned (and very messy!) sketch. After that, I may or may not do lineart using the Pen tool and occasionally with a borrowed graphics tablet.

Then, I proceed to fill in base color for each area (e.g skin, hair etc.), after which I create a new layer, group it with the base-color layer and then do shadows.

It's important to use new layers for each major graphic element of the picture (if your computer can handle it) because this way you can freely edit your layer without affecting the other parts of the picture.

As for adding effects, I seldom do it, but the Photoshop built-in filters might be of use to you.

[edit] It's very worth it to buy a good scanner if you're interested in digital art.
    chose a photo lol

  • What size should I make photoshop file that is to be used as a Dreamweaver website?

I've heard that websites look different on all monitors. If I am making my layout in Photoshop and then using Adobe Dreamweaver.. How do I get my website to look good on every computer. What is the process? Do I just have to make it a certain dimension?

Thanks very much! What size should I make photoshop file that is to be used as a Dreamweaver website?
lately the standard size for many flash and dreamweaver sites is 1024X768. however since many people are using and continue to get widescreen monitors for computers a lot of designers are going with 1680X1050. remember to always set your ';Resolution'; (under Image%26gt;Image Size) to 72, this is standard web resolution and it will keep your website from being too large and taking too long to load once it is complete. also, never forget to create things in RGB, just in case you did know. What size should I make photoshop file that is to be used as a Dreamweaver website?
Surely you are not trying to make a website using a Photoshop file? For a start, web browsers won't display psd files. You would need to compress graphics to gif or jpeg before using them within Dreamweaver. Of course websites will look different on different monitors, what you need to do is design your website so it fits on most people's screens. Make your page no wider than 1024 pixels - 800 wide is preferable. What is probably more important is that you check your website works with all the most popular browsers, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.
You can take width 800 to 1024 px (pixels).. (width of the minimum screen resolution you wish to support).. height could be anything according to the content... you can align the layout table on center and give some background color or texture.
I usually use 800x600, normally it fits most of the screens

If there's a certain small thing you want to take out you can use clone stamp but don't do big areas with the same thing because it will become noticeable that its not real but do it in small portions and don't always alt click in the same spot. sometimes you can also use healing brush it works better on people tho but sometimes it will work for take out small things in the background

What is a really good photoshop type program, for photographs?

I want to be able to touch up photos, maybe do some neat effects, etc. but I do not want to burst the bank! Any suggestions? What is a really good photoshop type program, for photographs?
If you want to quickly touch up photos, online editors like http://www.picnik.com are really easy.

Otherwise Gimp ( http://www.gimp.org ) is a really good free program.

If you are familiar with Photoshop, you can try Gimpshop, which is Gimp, but with the menus like Photoshop. http://gimpshop.blogspot.com/What is a really good photoshop type program, for photographs?
How about Photoshop Elements? It's Photoshop-lite! and goes for $150.
    adobe photoshop
    Adobe illustrator
Gimp. It's free, it's a lot like Photoshop though. It's called 'The Gimp.' Try to download it by finding a web on google. I %26lt;3 it.
Of course, any program from Adobe will do wonders to your photos as long as you know how to use the tools. But these programs can cost quite a sum of money so if you're serious about wanting to add some effects and are willing to spend some time to sit down and learn how to work with the program, then go for it! The large amount of money you paid with for the program is well worth it.

However, Paint Shop Pro is also a good alternative. While not as expensive by a couple of hundred dollars (US), it still has some wonderful effects. If you really get to know the program well enough, you can render effects that'll look just as good as those that came from Photoshop! It's a lot less complicated than Photoshop (in my opinion) and is good for someone just starting out in the photo-touchups-with-a-program field. Hope this helped!

There is a great site called photography corner. members share tips, techniques, and advice, and you can post your photos in various categories to be rated or critiqued. I like it far better than something like flickr, because it is aimed more at the serious amateur or semi-pro photographer, so the people are very knowledgeable.
There are several Photoshop Groups here on Yahoo. Just go to Groups and search for Photoshop. I belong to one myself and the people on there are generally friendly and at all different levels of knowledge and experience.

How can i scan or photoshop an image so that the color quality closely matches the original image?

Are there any settings i can use when scanning an image to maintain most of the original color quality of the scanned image? If not is there something i can do in photoshop?

If you know please list the steps

Thank You!How can i scan or photoshop an image so that the color quality closely matches the original image?
Yes, that is correct... when scanning things just don't look identical. I have noticed lots of times that it comes out a lot darker. So, to begin with I think this deals with the quality of your scanner, and how good / intense the light is. The more expensive, the brighter the light, and the better the scan, that is how it works.

So, to answer your question, I do not think there is anything you can do in the scanning process unless that is a option with the scanning software. But don't worry, you can do all your color / light correcting in Photoshop.

One of my favorite options to color correct is the Selective Color. It allows you to target different colors to make them more or less intense. Like it has a red, cyan, magenta, yellow, blues, greens, white, neutral, and black.

Also, you can use the basic color balance option, or go into the RGB channels.

Thanks for reading! How can i scan or photoshop an image so that the color quality closely matches the original image?
You're trying to match three pieces of hardware that all interpret colors differently: The monitor, the scanner, and the printer. This is almost impossible. With enough money and time it can be done, but only within that closed system. Take the file or the image to another monitor, the scanner or printer and it'll look different.

This is a complex subject. With that in mind...

Most importantly, to see colors correctly you need to calibrate your monitor and keep it calibrated. Look at Pantone's Huey or ColorVisions Spyder products. Monitors don't hold their calibration so it has to be maintained.

Then you need to look up color profiles for your particular printer and scanner, and learn how to assign and use them consistently.
Well the overall quality of the scan will depend on the quality of the scanner. You are going to want to scan in at least 300dpi for a photo quality image to work with.

How many photographers are using photoshop to clean up their images?

I'm 24 and have a budding interest in photography. Right now I have to use the equipment I have. Anyway, I have looked online at professional photographers work (often they are younger than me) and I notice the color pops out a little to much or everything looks just a little to clean. I compared these images to some books I own such as the Photobook and The World's Best Photography: Photojournalism and didn't see any work that came off like so many images I've looked at online. Basically, the color is just to perfect (almost to a level that seems animated) when compared to legitimate professional photographers. I personally would like to learn to use equipment the right way and not rely on photoshop to make my images presentable. Am I just late and wanting to join a dying breed? How many photographers are using photoshop to clean up their images?
You are so right. Too many young inexperienced and uneducated shooters make mistakes and then try to ';fix'; them using some kind of digital darkroom. Much like what beginning students do in their first class.

When shooting transparency film, there is no latitude and no way to ';fix'; anything. We had to be photographers and produce everything in the camera ... period.

I use Photoshop (Bridge) to modify my XMP files to reflect my copyright notice, my contact information, my clients contact information and keywords.

I do from time to time use the level control to adjust images that were shot in unusual lighting situations.

Of course when I shoot in RAW, I use Photoshop to create TIFF or JPEG files from them. How many photographers are using photoshop to clean up their images?
I could be [whatever] and say that 鈥?by definition 鈥?';photographers'; do not clean up images. They use the camera to capture images. A LOT of ';legitimate'; photographers do accomplish what you are seeing in the camera. I'd be foolish to say that nobody does any work in Photoshop or it's kind to enhance the final image, as many do. Even ';legitimate'; photographers may make some small adjustments to compensate for the inability to capture exactly what they want.

Viewing an image on a monitor is somewhat like viewing a transparency, also. The monitor is a light source so things will appear brighter. A print uses reflected light, so it might not be as bright. This is one reason why the prints you have seen in photo books don't ';pop'; quite as much as those that you view on a monitor. When I get a print of a slide, I do NOT view it on a light box or projected. I hold it over a piece of white paper and view it with light reflected off of that paper.

There may be some debate about whether ';real'; photographers alter images or not and I'd rather not go there. I'd rather just see someone admit when they couldn't get what they wanted and let the world accept that.

    Check this out. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei鈥?/a>

This is actually two ';untouched'; images merged into one. You just can't get the leaves, which are about 8-10 feet away, and the moon in sharp focus at the same time. I took two shots from almost the same spot, using a tripod, and combined what I needed from each image to come up with the final product. I dropped the sharp image of the moon right where the blurry one was in the shot of the leaves.

In fact, here you go. I just went through and added a ';NoPhotoshop'; tag to the appropriate images on my Flickr site. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei鈥?/a> When I say, ';NoPhotoshop,'; I admit that up to 50% sharpening has been allowed for this tag. If I altered levels, contrast or saturation, that disqualified the image from this tag. If I cropped an image, or if I cloned out dust or fingerprints from a scan, I did not consider that to be ';alteration'; in Photoshop and left it in the group. Some are very boring snapshots, but some are images that I am proud to show.
Practically everyone doing professional work will modify the image they captured initially. Sharpening, levels, contrast are adjustments done best in Photoshop rather than relying on in-camera processing.

How many ';old school'; photographers modified their work by deciding to use a specific film emulsion. Velvia vs Elitechrome. Deciding to use a certain contrast paper in B%26amp;W work. Burning and dodging a final print?

The methods have changed not the ideas. People have always modified their results if they want to take the time to.

Does it make a picture ';more pure'; if you use chemical processes? Not really.....
jake, Photoshop is simply the modern day equivalent of the darkroom and there's nothing wrong with using it judiciously.

Photojournalism's goal is to portray life events as they are and so the photos are minimally retouched. The other pictures in the magazines and websites are for different purpose and editors want those images to ';pop';.

For your own photos, find what you like, try different styles, use photoshop or don't use it, it's up to you, but experiment and don't hold back, until you find your own style.
Do you have an SLR camera? can you shoot in 'raw'? because I shoot in raw and that means that the photo isn't

'formatted' so when you open it, you adjust the exposure, contrast and saturation of the COLOR before you even open it...this makes it easier to format the photo, not necessarily manipulate it. Most professionals use this format because it's larger. I love it because, while I keep most of my photos in their original state, it comes out much larger and you can make the colors 'pop' as the way you see it in real life more than if you shot the photo in 'automatic' form...it's a way of shooting more as the eye sees it than relying on the camera to do all the work

I still have the theory that, just because someone buys Tiger Wood's golf clubs doesn't make them a good golfer. Same applies to shooting in RAW format, but it can give you more creative freedom to make sure the photo looks as you saw it with the nake eye, since cameras can't exactly duplicate that yet, no matter how on target your creative eye is for color, depth, subject, etc.

Photojournalism still gives a little freedom to adjust the exposure of a photograph...I know bc I'm a journalist by day and a photographer by 'side professional hobby'

you still have to have an eye for what makes a good photograph.
I am guessing way too many. When I first started shooting photos I used film much like I still do. I fell it sort of keeps you a little more honest and it helps you get the basics down. I don't depend so much on corrections. You aren't too late I am only 28(don't judge, that's young).
let me put it really simple...........anyone can do photoshop (i cant but dont need to really) and manipulate images...the hourly rate is about a third that of a good pro photographer

so if you follow the path to making images in the camera with lights and other tools you will always produce better images than those that do photography in the computer -

    a
You have a few things going on.

One is the images you see online don't look like that printed. They are brighter, more saturated and have more contrast because of the medium. If I put my print images online, they would look horrible because they are for print. Printed, they are beautiful. It's for just that reason, I have two profiles, online and print. I suspect that many photographers don't make the distinction and put up the print ready images.

Contemporary images are brighter and more contrasty than older images. Advertising and fashion photography have had a lot to do with creating a taste for that. Also, keep in mind that film and equipment have changed over the years and I don't mean just digital. Today's Tri X is not yesterdays film and the list of still remaining films would show the same thing. They have greater dynamic range, better color response, finer grain, etc. Much of what you see as too much perfection is actually the medium has moved beyond limitations of an older time. I can now shoot film at 1600 or 3200 or even 6400 with a quality that couldn't even be dreamed of several decades ago.

Keep in mind, too, that photojournalists shoot under less than optimum conditions and and the demands made on timeliness, etc., don't leave any time for doing the work that we wish we could do. I refer you to the work of W. Eugene Smith, one of the greatest photojournalists, to see the difference between the immediate usage shots he made and the essay work he did when he had full editorial control.

There is also a divide in attitudes, or more accurately, perspectives on photography. Some people almost make a religion out of 'in the camera' and take great pride in what they achieve, which they should. There are others, myself very much included, that try with (I like to believe) a similar level of skill, to get things right in the camera, but that is not the end of it. We may have an image that simply can't be caught at the moment of exposure. Photoshop replaces the darkroom and it's what we use it for. Some people do it to create novelty, others do it because it is the only way to make the statement, but it's always been done. People often cite someone like Ansel Adams, or the Weston's, or someone else as being 'pure' photographers. They actually believe that what they see happened and was complete at the moment of exposure. That simply isn't true.

However, none of the above goes to your question of being '... just late and wanting to join a dying breed?' Mastery and craftsmanship has never been the realm of the masses and the masters and true craftsman have never been a dying breed. There just has never been that many of them. You wouldn't be joining a dying breed, but a rather elite fraternity and the entrance requirements are simple. Learn to work to that standard and hold yourself to it.

There is only one person that can, or should, determine whether you learn to use your equipment well, poorly, or even at all. That is you. I certainly don't have anything to do with it and I don't want to. If you want to learn all the in's and out's, that is solely in your hands.

If you don't want to use photoshop to make up for your deficiencies, then simply don't use it. Figure out what you did wrong, or could have done better, and go back and do it that way. You have a camera in one hand and a mouse in the other. How you use either one of them is totally up to you.

    Vance

    Addendum:

Okay. It gets a little tiring hearing that 'real', 'legitimate', 'skilled', 'competent', pick you adjective, photographers do everything in the camera. The implication is insulting.

Here are two images. One is straight out of the camera. The conditions are what existed at the time and there is obviously no way to use all the nice lighting equipment everybody says use. The exposure was very carefully chosen to reveal the details where they are revealed and put the tones where they are. The sun is exactly where I wanted it and the flare was carefully controlled.

It was never intended to be the final image.

The second image is the one that I was after from the beginning. There is no way to get to the second image from the first (or any other first) without photoshop.

The intention of the image is what matters. This shot was for a photo essay about an industry moving on, in this case a shipyard, and it's effect on the community.

The intent was to dramatize, emphasize and create a feeling that mirrored the feelings of the people effected by the yards shut down. The grain was also intentionally added, since the original was grainless.

    http://picasaweb.google.com/Vance.Lear/T鈥?/a>

Now, either I am an unskilled snapshooter who uses photoshop to try and make my mistakes better, or I am just someone with a camera who calls himself a photographer and lets the camera do everything and uses a lot of fun filters that all I have to do is click and I get a great picture. I mean, there must be a filter like 'Noire filter for enhancing industrial decay. I'm sure I used it. Must have. Ya think?
    1. Agree with above that too many ';photographers'; try to make up for their lack of camera skill in Photoshop.

    2. However, for those of you who still hold the hard line that photoshop is somehow cheating, or that serious photographers don't manipulate their images post capture, I'd encourage you to look up the history of the Photo-Secessionist movement. Was Stieglitz not a true photographer because he manipulated his images in the darkroom with gum-bichromate?
I've used photoshop-type programs to crop, resize, and adjust exposure to my digital images. To be frank, I prefer that my photos be seen exactly the way I've captured them.

When I was shooting film (35mm and 2 1/4 medium format) I developed and printed all my own photos. Except for changing exposure and a bit of dodging and burning (showing my age here), I preferred an ';honest'; image when I printed it. No tints, no special effects, no darkroom magic. I was most satisfied when the magic what the picture I'd created in the camera.

I admire those who find, create, and dazzle, but I'd rather find, capture, and share. Just my humble opinion.
Interesting discussion you've started here. And you've already gotten some good information ... and some that's not so good.

Here's my take: I've been a photographer for more than 35 years. For most of that time I shot only transparency film ... and was quite good at it. Of course, I've learned the basics, and then some.

But today I'm completely digital. Would never go back to film! Some people may want to stay with film, some feel as if they have to. That's their choice.

I work with many other professional photographers, and I don't know of a single one who's still shooting film (well, maybe rarely).

If you're serious about photography you'll learn the rules and procedures - it's what we do in order to do the work that makes our living.

But the specific tools you use are far less important than your vision and imagination, your determination to work hard, and your ability to change with the times.

Today that means working in a digital world. Clients demand it, and everybody expects it. You simply cannot produce work as fast as you need to using traditional means.

Photoshop is nothing more than a darkroom. It's the means by which we realize the final deliverable version of our work.

Of course, it can be misused. But its basic function - if you're a photographer - is to optimize your images - and that's no different from producing work in a traditional darkroom ... except it's faster, cleaner, less smelly, and far, far less expensive!

Ansel Adams, the Westons, Steiglitz ... all of them ... would be using Photoshop today if they were still around ... whether they shoot digitally or on film.

Work with what you have ... and if you can afford the luxury of sticking with film - good for you.

But don't be made to feel as if you have to in order to become a REAL photographer.

What is the difference between Photoshop CS4 and CS2?

I used CS2 in high school and I am very familiar with it. I wondered if anyone knows the main differences between the two. Is CS4 basically just a better version of CS2 or is it a totally different program? What is the difference between Photoshop CS4 and CS2?
Any new version of the program is an improved version of it.

For example, Photoshop CS2 does not work well with intel macs or windows vista, because they did not exist when the program was released.

There are several new tools in Photoshop CS4 from CS2: Smart Objects, Smart Filters, Quick Selection Tool, Zoomify, 3D capabilities and lots more, not to mention the improvements to camera raw and bridge.

If you are worried about not being able to figure out the program because it might look too different, I wouldn't worry, its not really that different, almost everything from cs2 is in the same place. What is the difference between Photoshop CS4 and CS2?
Both. It is a better version of CS2 and a totally different program.

All of the CS4 components integrate much better with each other than they did in CS2. Additionally, many tasks are much easier to do with CS4 than they were with CS2. The upgrade from CS2 to CS3 is just as big as the upgrade from CS3 to CS4. Which means you're looking at a significant upgrade.

From the totally different program aspect of things, all of the CS4 software has been designed to take advantage of dual/quad processors if you have them. CS4 is a memory hog and you don't want to use it for video unless you have at least 8MB of RAM and a 64-bit operating system.

All in all, it's a nice upgrade and I think you'll enjoy it.

What size should I make photoshop file that is to be used as a Dreamweaver website?

How to crop images in Photoshop that are zoomed in on without image moving?

When I open a photo in Photoshop Elements or Photoshop and zoom in on it so much that some or all of the image goes off the screen, I can't crop the image anywhere near the corners without the image rapidly moving once I drag the crop mark.

  • What is the name of the older photographer who created Photoshop-like images without Photoshop?

I am trying to find the name/artwork of a photographer who manipulated multiple images and put them all in one picture. For example, in one of his photos it looks like cars are driving on a freeway directly through a giant tree. Another one is of a large river running through the middle of the streets in a big city. Any ideas, please let me know! What is the name of the older photographer who created Photoshop-like images without Photoshop?
Don't know if this is the one you are thinking of, but the long time best of combined pre digital imagery is Jerry Uelsmann.

Long before Photoshop or digital, he was creating images that I can't begin to say enough positive about.

It's Jerry Uelsmann, he was doing combinations of photos long before photoshop was thought about.

But I'm not sure if he's the exact photographer you are looking for.

That鈥檚 all folksHow can I let Photoshop CS3 automatically do changes i made to one picture, do to others?
Well i'm not /entirely/ sure of what cut brighten means, but i do know there is a way to brighten a multiple of layers without having to do over and over again.

You can try Layer %26lt; New adjustment Layer %26lt; Brightness/contrast %26lt; (press ok) and then adjust as you wish. However, make sure the adjustment layer is at the very top of the layer palette.

i'm sorry if i provided you with information you didn't need to hear xD

    good luck.
Yes, you will need to create an Action. This will literally record your steps and allow you to apply it to other files.

You'll need to go through all the steps of what you want to duplicate this first time. Open the file you want to apply the action to.

In Photoshop go to Window %26gt; Action to open the Actions palette. Click on the ';Create New Action'; button (looks like a piece of paper with a corner bent up). Give a name to your action and press Record. Now do the exact steps and press the Stop button (square) when you're done. You should see your action on the Actions palette.

Now open the file you want your actions performed on, click on your action, press Play (triangle), and there you go!
